Writing by jenny jaffe Johnny Goner started out as a one act play for a class I took over the summer of 2007 at New York University. At the time it was a flat-out comedy about a guy who planned his own funerals, but the play didn't give much explanation as to why he was doing it. The play didn't work at all, but I liked the characters a lot, so I started to rework it and found that the more I explored the characters and the story, the farther it moved away from a comedy. I told David about the screenplay I was developing and when he said he would be interested in directing it I began work on a final draft that would be short enough to shoot and edit within the confines of our busy schedules. The writing and rewriting process for this particular screenplay took place over about four months, and was reworked further once the roles were cast. While I'm ready to start working on other projects- I'd like to go back to writing comedy for a while- I will miss working on Johnny Goner enormously, thanks in no small part to the wonderful cast and crew. |
